The Year of the 10k

I've never been one to dwell on the past. While I think it's great to look back and think about lessons learned, things to improve upon, etc. I don't feel the need to rehash all the details. It's more productive to look forward and focus on achieving the next goal or milestone!

So instead of doing the typical 2015 recap post, I'm going to focus on the year to come. Last year was all about the 5k distance for me. While I'll still do some 5ks in 2016 - it is my favorite distance after all! - this year is the year of the 10k!.

The Tentative 2016 Race Schedule

Icebreaker Indoor 5k
Luck of the Irish 10k
Nicolet Bay 5k
Kings & Queens Half Marathon
Bellin 10k
Rock 'n' Roll Chicago 10k
Race for the Bacon 5k
Lake Country 5k
Rock 'n' Roll Montreal 10k
Milwaukee Running Festival 5k
Badgerland Striders Indoor 10k

I'm excited to race a longer distance this year! Hopefully training for a longer distance will also benefit my 5k racing. Something I struggle with a bit is having the strength to push the pace during the latter part of a 5k race. Training for and racing 10ks should help me improve in that aspect of racing.

A few things are staying constant in 2016. I'm still working with Coach Matt and ThunderDome Running. Since I started with Coach Matt, I can tell my running has improved as evidenced by stronger finishes and several PRs. I believe there are more to come this year!

A strong finish in San Antonio

I'll also continue to do a bulk of training, especially during the winter months - at the Downtown Y. The facility has a fantastic indoor track (6 laps = 1 mile) and the group exercise classes are fantastic. I get to challenge myself every day and am stronger for it. And we all know stronger = fewer injuries = more consistent training = faster running = PRs!

Eddie also believes more medals are in order for 2016!

So here's hoping for a speedy 2016! I can't wait to see what the year will bring :)

My questions for you:
  • What are your goal races in 2016?
  • What are your top running/fitness goals in 2016?
  • Do you prefer to reflect on the past or dream about the future?

  1. Looks like a good group of races for 2015. My wife an I will be at the Luck of the Irish 10k. We run the entire winter series 10k races. Although I am sure you will be ahead of me during the race! :)

After the winter series I typically increase my race distances to 1/2 marathon and up. This year I am planning on two marathons, Buffalo NY and hopefully the Lake Front. The Lake Front will depend on if my wife and I decide to run the Army 10 miler this year. I also have 2 Ragnar relays again Chicago and Great River. I will sprinkle in a couple of 1/2 marathons. I don't think I will run a 50k trail this year instead there is a 1/2 marathon trail run I am looking at. I enjoy a break from road running. Trail running is a different beast.

Looking forward to 2016 and I will try to stay healthy this year.

    1. Perhaps we'll get to meet in person at Luck of the Irish :)

Sounds like you have a great line up of races this year! Two marathons and two Ragnars should be a fun challenge - the halfs will feel short in comparison ;)

  2. You did have a great year of 5k's, and I think you will do awesome with more 10k's in 2016! I actually love the 10k, I feel like it's short enough you can still run fast, but long enough you can enjoy the run, soak it up a bit more and get more into the runners groove.
I always struggled with shorter races when I was younger the race would be over around the time I was just getting into it, LOL
I prefer to look to the future and dream big. But sometimes I like to reflect on the past too, just to remind me of what all I have done and remember how great life is especially when your really living it!
    Happy New Year my friend!

    1. Happy New Year to you too! I agree that looking back on the past can be a great way to remember what makes life great. In that way, I do like reflecting on the past - great for remembering all we have to be grateful for :)

    1. Thanks Jen! Group classes are seriously the best. You get to work so hard but it's also fun at the same time. Some of my favorite hours of the week :)
